James Burnett, The Office of James BurnettOffice of James Burnett은 1989년에 설립되어 올해로 창립 21주년을 맞았다. 지난 20여년 동안 추구해온 기업운영 철학과 디자인 철학에 대해 알고 싶다.나는 세계적인 Planning & Design 회사 CRSS에서 5년간 근무 후 지난 1989년 휴스턴에 지금의 회사를 설립했다. It has been the 21st anniversary of the office of James Burnett since established in 1989. What is your philosophy of designing projects and operating business over 20 years?The firm was founded in Houston in 1989 after I left my position at the international planning and design firm CRSS, where I practiced for 5 years as a landscape architect. It was a profoundly informative experience and it made me very conscious of size and composition of my own firm; I find both offices tend to perform and function best when they are small and agile. We continually exchange ideas in whatever media format is most convenient, whether it is a rough sketch on trace paper, a cell phone photo, someone’s favorite blog or just a cool video making the rounds on the internet. Our staff is very passionate about design and the frequent exchange of ideas is something that everyone benefits from. As a businessman, I have been very careful to be sure that the projects that we take on are right for us ? keeping the team motivated is critical to our firm. It’s also important that we do not live beyond our means or grow too large too fast. While this has occasionally inconvenienced us in the short term, the long term benefits have been invaluable. We work on projects that we like, enjoy good relationships with leading architects and are always thinking about the next big project. It strongly seems that most projects emphasize space elements or material details. What is your opinion about the importance or meaning which has details in landscape space? Strong spatial order and thoughtful detail design is at the heart of our work. We construct 5-10 new gardens every year and have built our reputation as a firm that enjoys building projects. Our team works closely with the owner, architect and the other designers on the team to create meaning in the project. Detail design is a critical ? and often overlooked- aspect of project design. I always encourage my team to take the time to understand the problem and to take the time to figure out how all the pieces fit together. Sometimes these things turn up in the field but more often than not problems can be resolved in the studio before construction ever begins. Creating a distinct sense of place is also critical to the success of a project. This can occur on a number of levels ? natural patterns found in the region may be replicated on site; cultural events and traditions may be abstracted as a point of departure for a design element. At other times, the architecture becomes the central feature of the project and we extend that language into the landscape. The Annenberg Center at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage, California is an extension of the 200-acre desert retreat of publisher, diplomat and philanthropist Ambassador Walter Annenberg and his wife Leonore. The Annenberg’s commissioned the California modernist architect A. Quincy Jones to design their second home in the desert in 1963. In 2006, The Office of James Burnett was selected to design the gardens for the Annenberg Center at Sunnylands. OJB has designed a 9-acre interpretive landscape that expresses the beauty, color, form and texture of the Sonoran Desert. The Center will be a place of learning for the public to better understand their philanthropic legacy and the history of Sunnylands as an American icon. OJB worked closely with Mrs. Annenberg and the Annenberg Trust to create a sustainable desert botanical garden that compliments the original mid-century modern house and garden. This innovative approach to design of a desert garden provides an alternative to the traditional Palm Springs landscapes that rely on heavy water use, chemical fertilizers and regionally-inappropriate plant material. The landscape design for the Center simplifies the plantings and provides a carefully orchestrated visual experience. The planting scheme balances interest in color, form and texture; utilizing a palette of native and adapted desert species to shape a living canvas. The gardens immediately adjacent to the Center extend the clean, simple geometry of the building into the landscape. As one moves away from the modern composition of the building and garden courts, the plantings are more informal and reflective of the native forms found in the Coachella Valley. The 9-acre botanical gardens are simple, elegant and planted in dramatic masses. To enhance the visitor experience, the Center will offer a garden tour narrated by the project team. Opened in 1988, the 15-acre Myriad Botanical Gardens is an integral component in the downtown fabric of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Funded by TIF district proceeds related to the construction of the adjacent Devon Energy World Headquarters, the City of Oklahoma City hired the Office of James Burnett to develop a design that improves pedestrian circulation, increases visibility and provides additional areas for programmed activity while respecting the many specimen trees on site. Arriving at the newly-renovated Crystal Bridge tropical conservatory, visitors to the park meander through a variety of specialty botanical gardens before grabbing a coffee at the caf?, enjoying a meal at the restaurant or watching a performance on the great lawn. New public promenades and a series of flexible garden spaces support the expanded program of Oklahoma City’s annual Festival of the Arts. Bisected by the existing Olive Street bridge, the park is organized by a sweeping pedestrian promenade that features a continuous canopy of specimen Pond Cypress. The promenade begins at the southwestern corner of the park, drawing visitors of downtown through the park past a botanical garden, a children’s garden with an interactive water feature, a reading room, and an event lawn. A large public plaza adjacent to Olive Street connects the restaurant terrace, the performance pavilion, the casual take-out pavilion to the street and features an interactive fountain feature. The pedestrian promenade continues to the east across Olive Street and features a number of passive plaza and garden spaces. The pedestrian promenade continues beyond the plaza and connects to a series of intimate garden courtyards, a dog park with an interactive fountain feature and a signature interactive water feature that anchors the park along Pearl Street. Groves of Oak trees flank the site, providing a strong architectural rhythm along the street and serving as a buffer from the activity of the adjacent frontage roads. The Crossings텍사스 힐 컨트리Texas Hill Country의 210에이커의 유약지(fragile land: 황폐화에 민감한 토지, 토양유실이 심한 토양)에 위치한 크로싱즈는 아름다운 트레비스 호수가 내려다보이는 곳에 자리 잡은 스파 및 건강센터이다. 단지 내에는 8개의 별장을 비롯해 70개의 게스트 룸, 차고, 환영센터, 안식처, 다이닝 홀, 건강센터 등 다채로운 경관 어메니티(landscape amenities)가 마련되어 있다. 대상지가 이미 가지고 있던 녹색 디자인 요소는 우선적으로 따라야 하는 상위 조건이었다. 조경가는 애드워드 대수층(Edwards Aquifer: 모래, 자갈, 실트, 점토 등 공극량이 많은 것으로 구성된 지하수를 함유한 지층)으로 스며들 수 있는 빗물의 양을 최대화하기 위해 대상지를 가로지르는 포장을 투수성으로 제한하였다.빗물과 오수를 모아 부지의 관개시스템으로 활용하였고 대상지에 가장 많이 활용된 소재들은 모두 주변지역에서 가져온 것들이다. 예외적으로 방문자센터 주변 두 곳만 매우 깔끔하게 정비되었으며, 부지에는 자생식물 또는 내건성이 강한 식물이 대량으로 식재되었다. Located on 210 acres of fragile land in the Texas Hill Country, the Crossings is a destination spa and wellness center overlooking beautiful Lake Travis. With 70 guest rooms distributed in eight lodges, the Crossings campus features a carriage house, a welcome center, a sanctuary, a dining hall, a wellness center and numerous landscape amenities. Incorporating green design elements was a high client priority. The landscape architect limited pervious paving across the site to maximize the amount of rainfall that percolates through to the Edwards Aquifer. Both rainwater and effluent are harvested on-site to feed the irrigation system and most materials on the site are locally sourced. With the exception of the two highly-manicured areas near the visitor center, the site is planted extensively with native or drought tolerant material. Faced with an open plaza that lacked amenities, The Office of James Burnett was challenged by the client to create an active plaza that provides a new entry for the 1980’s building. The plaza welcomes visitors and tenants through the creation of an outdoor gathering space with canopy shade trees, cooling water features, comfortable furniture and fascinating plantings. Because the plaza is located above an existing parking structure, the design also faced significant technical challenges. A large elliptical fountain basin defines both the primary function space and the primary pedestrian path to the entry. The fountain features a series of overflowing basins, concentric rings of bubblers and a focal with a choreographed display of jets shooting up to 20’ in the air. Custom-designed planting structures accommodate mature Oak trees, provide seating and conceal LED accent lighting. Movable furniture at the plaza provides additional flexibility as the needs of site users change throughout the day. A mature population of koi fills the pool with an ever-changing display of orange, yellow and white. ConocoPhillips코노코필립스사의 업무단지 리노베이션 작업으로 진행된 이 프로젝트는 62에이커의 대상지를 사무공간과 의료시설, 피트니스, 공공공지의 기능을 갖춘 새로운 코어로 조성하는 것이다. 기존의 소극적이고 평범한 단지의 경관을 새로운 디자인의 다양한 프로그램이 집약된 공간으로 변모시켰다. 기존에 자라고 있던 참나무들은 보존하여 새로운 단지의 입구부와 연속된 캐스케이드형 수경시설 주변에 정형식으로 식재하였다. 안뜰에 마련된 조그마한 정원은 중앙의 식당과 프라이빗 다이닝 테라스, 1,000명의 사람들을 수용할 수 있는 이벤트 잔디마당과 같은 일부시설들로 발걸음을 유도한다. 또한 2마일의 조깅코스와 축구장 등을 갖춰 근로자들의 건강을 촉진시키고 있다. The renovation of this corporate campus creates a new core of office, medical, fitness and public space on the 62-acre project site. Originally developed as a passive suburban landscape, the new design integrates a variety of programmed areas throughout the campus. Sited to preserve existing specimen live oaks, the new campus entry features a formal auto court and a series of cascading water features. Smaller garden courtyards lead to the central Commons, which features a number of private dining terraces and an event lawn that accommodates 1,000 people. To promote employee wellness, the site also features a 2-mile jogging path and a soccer field. Brochstein Pavilion at Rice University2010 ASLA Professional Awards General Design 부문 Honor Awards 수상작“200년을 향한 비전”의 핵심 요소로 개발된 브로스타인 파빌리온은 라이스대학교 캠퍼스의 대화와 소통의 장인 쿼드랭글(quadrangle: 학교나 대학에서 건물이 사방으로 둘러싸고 있는 사각형 안뜰)로 변화되었다.약 557제곱미터 규모의 파빌리온은 간단한 식사를 제공하며, 약 929제곱미터의 포장된 야외테라스 시설이 있다. 바닥에는 화강암 쇄석이 깔려있고, 조그만 숲에는 건물의 기준선에 맞춰 48그루의 Allee Lacebark Elm(느릅나무의 일종, 학명은 Ulmus parrifolia ‘Allee’)이 격자형으로 심겨 있으며, 파빌리온과 근처 폰드렌 중앙도서관 사이의 정비된 공간으로 구성되었다. 두 개의 낮은 콘크리트 수경시설은 수목캐노피 아래의 공간을 명확하게 해주며 이동식 의자는 학생들과 교수들의 즉흥적인 모임을 가능하게 해준다. 더불어 생명력 있는 참나무와 개선된 보행로는 쿼드랭글의 기존 체계를 더욱 공고하게 해준다. Developed as a key element of the “Vision for the Second Century” strategic plan, the Brochstein Pavilion has transformed the Central Quadrangle into the social center of the Rice University campus.The 6,000 SF pavilion offers light refreshments and features a 10,000 SF covered outdoor terrace. Set in a field of decomposed granite, a grove of 48 Allee Lacebark Elms respond to the grid of the building and organize the space between the Pavilion and the adjacent Fondren Library. Two low concrete fountains define the space under the canopy and movable seating accommodates impromptu gatherings of students and faculty. Additional plantings of Live Oaks and improved pedestrian paths reinforce the existing framework of the Quadrangle.
