환경과조경

백석동천은 서울 종로구 부암동 115번지 일원에 위치하며, 면적은 50,861㎡로, 백악산북악산의 옛 이름 뒷자락 북한산을 배경으로 한 백사골에 조성된 별서를 포함한 정원유적이다. 현재 건물지 및 연지, 각자바위 등은 자연과 인공이 화합하는 순응의 미학을 공간적, 지형적으로 연계시키고 있다. 2005년 3월 25일 사적 제462호로 지정되었다가 2008년 1월 8일 명승 제36호로 변경되었다.Baekseokdongcheon which is located in 115, Buamdong, Jongno-gu, Seoul is 50,861㎡ area. The aesthetics of adaptation is connected spatially, topographically and functionally with Anchae, Sarangchae and Pond, Intaglio rock. It was appointed as a Scene Site No.36 in 8th, January, 2008.

남부의 아이비리그라고 불리기도 하는 듀크대학교는 연구 중심 사립대학교로서 원래는 1838년 트리니티(Trinity)라는 마을에 감리교도와 퀘이커교도들에 의해 설립되었는데 1892년 현 위치인 더럼으로 옮기게 되었고, 제임스 B. 듀크(James B. Duke)가 듀크 기금을 설립한 1924년 무렵부터 그의 부친인 워싱턴 듀크(Washington Duke)를 기려 듀크대학교라는 이름을 갖게 되었다. 미국의 주요 대학교와 식물원이 설립된 배경에는 대부분 그 지역을 기반으로 경제적으로 큰 부를 이룬 사람들의 기부가 있었다는 것은 이제는 색다른 일이 아니다. 당시 듀크 역시 담배와 목화의 집산지였던 이 지역에 담배 공장을 세워 더럼시를 미국의 대표적인 담배 생산 도시로 만들었으며, 전력 사업으로도 큰 성공을 이룬 가문이었다. 사라 듀크 가든의 발자취1920년대 초에 듀크대학교의 계획가들은 현재 사라 듀크 가든이 위치한 지역을 호수로 만들려는 계획을 갖고 있었다. 하지만 이 프로젝트를 위한 자금이 모두 소진되면서 이 계획은 무산되었다. 1934년에 이르러 가든의 조성이 시작되었는데, 여기에는 헤인즈 박사(Dr. Frederick Moir Hanes)의 공이 컸다. 듀크 의학대학의 교수였던 그는 벤저민 듀크(Benjamin Duke)의 미망인 사라 듀크(Sarah P. Duke)를 설득하여 2만 달러의 기부금으로 이곳 캠퍼스 골짜기에 정원을 만들 것을 제의했다. 그 후 1935년까지 100개의 화단에 40,000여 구의 붓꽃과 25,000여 구의 수선화, 10,000여 구의 각종 구근들이 식재되었는데, 불행히도 심각한 폭우로 인해 모두 쓸려가 버리고 말았다. 정원은 완전히 폐허가 되다시피 하였고, 설상가상으로 사라 듀크는 1936년 죽음을 맞이하게 되었다. 그 후 헤인즈 박사는 사라의 딸인 메리 듀크 비들(Mary Duke Biddle)에게 제의하여 보다 높은 지대에 새로운 가든을 조성하여 그녀의 어머니를 기념하도록 하였는데, 여기에 조경설계가 엘렌 비들 쉽먼(Ellen Biddle Shipman)이 참여하여 현재 테라스(Terrace)로 알려진 이탈리아 양식의 정원을 만들게 된 것이다.
