서울 시내 최초의 화장시설
서울은 전국에서 가장 많은 인구를 보유한 도시이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 화장시설이 없어 타 시도 화장장을 이용하거나 4~5일장을 치르는 등의 불편을 감수해왔었다. 이에 서울시에서는 서초구에 화장시설을 마련하여 시민들의 불편을 해소하고자 하였으나, 혐오시설로서 인식되는 화장시설이 도시 내에 자리하는 것을 꺼리는 사회적인 분위기로 인하여 10여 년간 시설 마련이 미루어져 왔다. 그러던 차에 지난 2008년 두 가지의 조건을 충족시킨다는 전제하에 서울추모공원 건립공사 사업이 시행되었다. 그 첫 번째 조건은 주변 환경과 일체화하여 외부의 어느 곳에서도 화장시설로 인식되지 않도록 하는 것, 둘째는 무공해화장시설로 유해가스와 백연설비를 완벽히 해결해야 한다는 것이었다. 이러한 배경으로 건립이 진행된 서울시내 최초의 화장시설이 ‘서울추모공원’이라는 이름으로 문을 열었다.
The First Crematorium in Seoul
Even though Seoul has the largest population in the country, it does not have any crematorium; as a result, the residents should use the facilities in neighboring cities. In order to solve this problem, the Seoul Metropolitan Government tried to establish the city’s rst crematorium. However, the plan has continues to be postponed for over a decade. In 2008, the construction of a memorial park got started on two conditions. One is that the building is not to be recognized as a crematorium being integrated into surrounding landscape. The other is that it should be constructed as a clean crematorium free from any kind of noxious gases or polluting chemicals.
