싱가포르가 야심차게 추진하고 있는 가든스 바이 더 베이(Gardens by the Bay) 프로젝트의 1단계 구역인 베이 사우스 가든(Bay South Garden)이 지난 6월 29일 일반에 공개되었다. 싱가포르 국립공원운영이사회(National Parks Board of Singapore)가 발주한 이 프로젝트는 지난 2006년 국제공모를 통해 영국의 그랜트 어소시에이츠가 이끄는 설계팀을 베이 사우스 가든에 대한 설계사로 선정하였다.

가든스 바이 더 베이는 비슷한 성격의 프로젝트로는 세계에서 가장 큰 규모의 정원 프로젝트 중 하나이다. 공원의 전체 부지는 101헥타르에 이르며, 베이 사우스(Bay South), 베이 이스트(Bay East), 베이 센트럴(Bay Central) 등 총 세 곳의 개성 넘치는 공원들로 채워질 예정이다. 싱가포르의 새로운 도심으로 급부상하고 있는 마리나 베이(Marina Bay)의 간척지에 위치한 가든스 바이 더 베이는 지역민과 해외관광객 모두에게 독특한 여가 체험의 기회를 제공하게 될 것이다. 이 중 베이 사우스는 가든스 바이 더 베이에서 가장 큰 규모의 공원이며, 마리나 베이 샌즈(Marina Bay Sands)와 인접한 54헥타르 넓이의 부지에 자리 잡고 있다.

이 프로젝트는 싱가포르의 미래 비전인 “공원 속의 도시(City in a Garden)”의 핵심 사업 가운데 하나이며, 싱가포르의 국가적 위상을 제고하는 한편, 세계 최고 수준의 원예 및 정원 조성 기법을 보여주는 것을 목표로 설계되었다.

The first phase of Singapore’s dramatic Gardens by the Bay project opens to the public on 29th June following completion of the 54-hectare £500m Bay South Garden by a world-class British design team led by Bath-based landscape architects, Grant Associates.

Gardens by the Bay is one of the largest garden projects of its kind in the world.  Ultimately, the site will total 101 hectares comprising three distinct gardens — Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central. Located on reclaimed land in Singapore’s new downtown at Marina Bay, the site will provide a unique leisure destination for local and international visitors. Bay South is the largest garden at Gardens by the Bay and it stands at 54 hectares located next to the Marina Bay Sands.

The project is an integral part of Singapore’s “City in a Garden” vision, designed to raise the prole of the city globally whilst showcasing the best of horticulture and garden artistry.
