The densely populated multi-cultural urban area features several major thoroughfares and many architectural and cultural landmarks, but few parks and open spaces. AHBE designed the high-profile Robert F. Kennedy Inspiration Park on Wilshire Boulevard, the main east-west corridor that bisects Koreatown. Where the historic Ambassador Hotel once stood, the park is part of a new 24-acre academic campus that is known to be one of the largest school construction projects in the U.S. to date.The design for the one-third acre park was guided by the idea of a spiritual journey honoring the site’s history and its urban context while commemorating Robert F. Kennedy and other Americans who paved the way for democracy and human rights. AHBE created a sequence of experiential spaces that took advantage of the topography and provides visitors with multiple views of the city and, at its highest points, the new school campus.

As a result of the diversion, Owens Lake, which once covered an area over 100 square miles, quickly receded, leaving an expansive salt flat, and an altered area depleted of wildlife ecology. The present lake’s surface has created a catastrophic alkali dust problem and raised an area-wide health concern. AHBE and other designers were commissioned to undertake a comprehensive study to integrate a more aesthetic approach to the current dust mitigation methods employed by the LADWP.AHBE looked at this challenging project from a scientific and aesthetic perspective and worked closely with the multi-disciplinary team, which included a wildlife biologist, soil scientist, habitat ecologist and engineers.The entire project team incorporated a strategy that would foster initial plant germination, plant establishment and soil building despite the area’s unfavorable conditions of extreme heat, cold and high salinity soil.

Gardens by the BayAHBE는 싱가포르 도심 한복판에 추진되고 있는 세 곳의 신규 공원 건설 프로젝트에 대한 국제 디자인 공모전에 초청받아 참가하였다. The firm’s design imagined three new experiences for Singapore: an island, a sanctuary, and a playground.As an urban place for living, working and playing, the concept of the “island” a new and unique ecology to the downtown area. Floating island bumps were placed strategically so that users can enjoy the views of Singapore’s skyline, creating a temporary respite from urban life. Our design also proposed a place of sanctuary. As they meander along a trail, visitors would come upon gardens of native tropical ecology and engage with birds and other wildlife within the sanctuary. Gardens By the Bay also poses as a natural playground for families and adults alike. The “playground” is a place where the residents of Singapore can socially interact among themselves in a community-based space. Ground undulations designed into the park would become a series community swimming holes and water fountains filled with freshwater, saltwater, wave pool and rainbow mists.

The Vision Plan redefines and reconfigures Vermont Avenue, a major transportation corridor and existing public right-of-way into a multi-modal, multi-functional street with a 9-acre linear park down its center.The Vision Plan proposes a design that promotes regional identity and a sense of place, highlighting the use of native plants, local materials, and water conservation techniques. Many visible, sustainable technologies are proposed for the site, including the use of water efficient irrigation systems, permeable surfaces for two-thirds of the site, locally-sourced and 10% recycled materials, dark-sky compliant lighting, light-colored, and lowalbedo paving. Additionally, a large sub-surface storm water treatment basin is proposed beneath the park. All these features strive to educate residents about their landscape, culture and history.

In addition to built work, our staff is actively engaged in creating conceptual art as installations in public spaces. “Shreddings Part 1: Garden Redrawn” is an examination, criticism and acknowledgement of the landscape architect’s dichotomous role as an environmental steward and a craftsman bound to a paper-intensive design process. The art installation developed from an idea of interrupting the flow of recycled paper. We shredded a month’s worth of the firm’s paper waste, accumulating over 700 pounds of shredded paper, which we equated to about 17 trees.Rather than throwing the paper into a recycling bin, discarded documents, drawings, and sketches entered a different state: a temporary garden.

The 523-acre campus overlooks the Yucaipa Valley and its landscape character reflects the beauty of its natural hillside setting. AHBE Landscape Architects first began its work with the College in 2005 when, as a member of a multi-disciplined team, the firm collaborated on the development of a twenty-year campus master plan.The master plan provided the framework for future development on the campus by thoughtfully accommodating the forecasted growth in its student population, preserving the park-like character and architectural integrity of the campus, and enhancing the College’s identity and presence in the community.

Beginning from a desire to create a unique shopping experience with an inspiration stemmed from a botanical garden, the resulting design for the outdoor promenade incorporates nature into an urban retail context and creates a retail environment as a community space.The promenade’s design demonstrates how landscapes can be multifunctional, combining commerce and retail with social gathering, community building, and, even, health and exercise. Maps located throughout the promenade, for example, show a designated route with distance indicators for people who use the promenade’s loop for exercise. Providing more than just a lifestyle aesthetic, this project also educates the public about nature and the natural system through plantings, water features, and other elements. The central court water feature is biologically balanced, with no chemicals added to its filtration systems. Micro ecologies exist within this system and promote the biological cycle through specific plant material, fish, and insects.

Providing more than just a lifestyle aesthetic, this project also educates the public about nature and the natural system through plantings, water features, and other elements. The central court water feature is biologically balanced, with no chemicals added to its filtration systems. Micro ecologies exist within this system and promote the biological cycle through specific plant material, fish, and insects.
