Yawoori Sculpture Plaza

Located in Cheonan, Arario Cultural and Commercial Complex has long been developed by Arario Inc., which consists of bus terminal, department store, business and cultural facilities, and art gallery. Our main project site, Yawoori Sculpture Plaza, is a rectangular plaza surrounded by the buildings, which features sculptures and resting places. The works exhibited here include those of such famous sculptors as Isamu Noguchi, Armand Fernandes, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Choi Jeong Hwa, and CiKim. The place is so well-known that it has attracted many tourists from abroad as well as the citizens of Cheonan.

After about 20 years of enjoying popularity, the plaza needed to renovate itself as an essential part of the comprehensive remodeling of the complex. As a designer, I could immediately notice several problems it was faced with. First, the site didn’ have any distinctive identity as it serves people as public open space and belongs to larger constructions as their garden at the same time.

Second, even though a good number of sculptures were being exhibited, there was no relationship or communication established either between the visitors and the works or between the works and the site. Worse still, due to limited amount of space, some sculptures were not to be seen at all, or just partially visible, making it impossible to deliver their message in full.

To solve this problem, the appropriate number of sculptures was calculated and the curator from Arario reselected and arranged the exhibits. We tried to create appeals with each small and large space rather than redesign the site as a whole, making a spacious garden here and a small resting place there with these separated spaces. Simple materials being chosen, shrubs and flowering plants were introduced. For trees, maple was exclusively planted to be harmonious with sculptures. Planters work as pedestals for the sculptures and maintain a distance between visitors and the exhibits. The planters also help adjust undulating ground level of the site.

The site is not solely for the sculptures. It is designed as an urban green space with sunken wall, shady stand, deck garden, and long seat wall, where people can visit, rest, and enjoy themselves.

천안시 신부동에 위치한 아라리오 복합 문화 상업 시설은 시외버스 터미널로부터 시작해 백화점, 복합 문화 상업 시설, 갤러리 등을 차례차례 개발해온 (주)아라리오의 오랜 결과물이다. 그 건물군들로 둘러싸인 긴 장방형의 광장에 조각과 휴식 공간 등이 마련된 곳이 우리의 주 설계 대상지이다.

여기는 Isamu Noguchi, Armand Fernandes, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, 최정화, CiKim 등과 같은 유명한 조각가들의 조각을 만날 수 있는 곳이다. 이곳을 지나면서 나의 눈을 잡아끌던 것들은 주변의 맥락과 맞닿아 있지 않다고 생각된 조각들이었다.

천안이라는 지역적 특수성과 버스터미널 및 백화점이라는 공공성에 조각이라는 것은 쉽게 매칭이 되지 않는 매우 생경한 조합이었다. 더욱이 이곳에는 문화예술의 집합 장소인 서울에서 조차 보기 어려운 세계적 거장들의 조각들이 24시간 개방되어 있는 옥외 광장에 놓여 있었다. 이것을 어떻게 이해해야 할 것인가?

우리가 제시한 공간적 해법은 상대적으로 복잡하지 않을 뿐 아니라 조각이 더욱 부각될 수 있는 계획안이다. 조각은 그 규모를 감안해 이 공간에 수용 가능한 적정 밀도를 제시하고 아라리오 측의 큐레이터가 이를 바탕으로 조각을 선정·배치해 공간을 다시 조정해 나갔다.
공간의 형태를 만들려 하기보다는 크고 작은 공간의 규모감을 형성하려 했고 이 크고 작은 공간들이 모여 너른 마당을 만들기도, 작은 휴게 공간이 형성될 수 있도록 했다.
