개요
케냐에서의 도시농업은 단지 식량 생산 차원에서 뿐만 아니라, 깨끗한 공기제공, 경사면과 하상 보호, 그리고 도시의 녹색 이미지 구축 등에 있어서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다는 사실을 이 글을 통해 알게 될 것이다. 토지와 밀착된 삶을 살아가고 있기 때문에 도시 농부들은 버려졌을 수도 있는 땅을 가꾸고 관리하는 데 열심이다. 사례 연구는 이러한 내용을 잘 보여주고 있다. 사례 연구는 NGO운두구Undugu에 의해 나이로비Nairobi의 슬럼가들 가운데 한 곳에서 시행되었으며, 도시농업을 통해 농사짓는 여성들과 이들이 살아가는 환경이 어떻게 변화될 수 있는지 보여준다. 프레데릭 그루텐휴이스 Fréderique Grootenhuis와 잉그릿 뒤케르트Ingrid Duchhart 이들 두 명의 조경가가 사례 연구의 디자인을 맡았으며, 운두구협회Undugu Society의 쿠리아가투라Kuria Gathura가 주의 깊고 인내심 있는 디자인 실행을 지원해 주었다. 이들의 의견에 따르면, 지속적인 도시화가 이뤄지고 있는 지구상에서 조경가들은 책임감을 가지고 인간의 기본적 필요를 충족시켜줄 수 있는 도시환경을 디자인해야 한다. 이와 같은 책임감을 가지고 살아감에 있어서 도시농업 및 도시 농림업은 중요한 기술적 토대를 마련해줄 수 있을 것이다.
서론
지난 20여 년에 걸쳐 도시농업은 아프리카의 도심지 및 촌락에서 보편적으로 발견되는 특징이 되었다. 이 글에서 필자는 주로 케냐에 초점을 맞추고자 하는데, 프레데릭 그루텐휴이스와 필자가 그곳에서 오랜 기간 살면서 일했기 때문이다.
Abstract
With this paper, it is stated that in Kenya, the importance of urban agriculture does not lie only in food production, but also in the provided landscape services such as, fresh air, protection of steep slopes and riverbeds, and green image of the city. Through their attachment to land, urban farmers care for and maintain otherwise dilapidated land. A case study illustrates these propositions. A case study is carried out in one of the slums of Nairobi by the NGO Undugu and shows how urban agriculture changed the life of the farming women and their direct living environment. The landscape architects (Fréderique Grootenhuis and Ingrid Duchhart) played a role in the design of the case study, while Kuria Gathura from Undugu Society carefully and patiently guided the implementation of the design. It is in their opinion, that in an increasingly urbanizing world, landscape architects have to take the responsibility in designing urban landscapes that provide for basic human needs. Urban agriculture and urban agroforestry can form an important technology in living up to this responsibility.
Introduction
For over 20 years urban agriculture has become a common practice in villages and urban centres in Africa. In this paper, I focus on Kenya, because Fréderique Grootenhuis and I lived and worked there for many years.
