Elwood Foreshore
ASPECT Studios는 포트 필립Port Phillip 시와 엘우드Elwood 해변을 재개발하는데 착수하였다. 이 부지는 여느 해변이나 대중을 위한 공공공간과 같이 어지럽게 배치된 주차장과 커뮤니티 및 보트클럽들의 공간의 남용, 배수시설 문제, 수목덮개의 부족 등으로 이용이 활성화되지 못하였다. 더욱이 공간을 무질서하게 점유하는 자동차나 보트는 자전거를 타거나 조망을 하는 사람, 소풍이나 일광욕을 즐기러 오는 사람, 그리고 휴식을 즐기려는 인근 거주민들의 자유를 방해함으로써 공공공간과 해안가, 그리고 바다 사이에 만들어지는 기본적이면서도 수평적인 관계를 깨트리게 된다. 포트 필립Port Phillip시와 Aspect Studios는 해변의 다양한 클럽과 레스토랑에 설치될 물탱크와 보수된 주차장에 적용되는 WSUD1의 계획과 설치로 물에 대한 통합적인 접근을 하였다.
특이사항
Elwood 산책로는 그리 크지 않았던 반면에 St Kilda2의 새로운 산책로가 엘우드를 대표하는 주요 공간으로 거대한 스케일의 차별화된 프로젝트라는 점에서 시작된 것이다. 그래서 기존의 것들과 엮으면서 좀더 중립적인 접근을 하였고 적은 예산으로 효과적인 접근이 되도록 하였다. 이 디자인은 적은 예산과 작은 규모의 프로젝트였음에도 불구하고 정결함과 지속성을 보여주었다. Aspect Studios는 현대적인 방식으로 해변의 토착성을 그려내듯이 포트 멜버른Port Melbourne과 엘우드Elwood 사이에서 최근의 해변 언어들에 한한 설계를 하는데 신중한 선택을 하였다.
1. SUD(Water Sensitive Urban Design) _각종 도시 개발 시 빗물 혹은 오수를 재활용하는 설계의 예로 호주에서 흔하게 찾아 볼 수 있다.
2. St Kilda는 호주 멜버른에 위치한 세계적인 명소로 세계적으로 많은 사람이 이 해변을 찾는다. 그밖에 해마다 F1 포뮬러 자동차 경기가 열리는 지역으로 유명하다.
ASPECT Studios in conjunction with the City of Port Phillip undertook the redevelopment of the Elwood foreshore precinct. This site like many foreshores and their public spaces, have been wilted away by inappropriate car parks, community and boat clubs exceeding their limits, inappropriate drainage and lack of tree cover. Such that the primary, horizontal relationship between the foreshore public spaces and the beach and sea were dislocated; with the car and boats dominating the freedom of pedestrians, sunbathers, picnickers, bike riders and views. The City of Port Phillip and ASPECT Studios keenly pursued an integrated approach to water, with planning and installation of water tanks for the various clubs and restaurants in the foreshore and full WSUD for the renovated car park.
Special Factors
It was clear from the onset of the project that the new promenade at St Kilda was the main, large scale and differentiated promenade for the City, while the Elwood promenade was a significantly smaller project, and the approach was more to weave together the existing and a more neutral, and let’ be honest cost effective approach. The design provides elegance and sustainability within the limits of its scale and budget. Importantly ASPECT Studios chose to design within the current foreshore languages between Port Melbourne and Elwood, i.e. drawing on the vernacular of the foreshores in a contemporary manner.
