Lower Lea Valley Olympic+Legacy Masterplans

운하, 도로, 철로, 상하수도 그리고 전기 철탑으로 얽혀 있는 Lower Lea Valley는 오랫동안 런던의 각종 도시 인프라의 관문이었다. 새로운 세기가(2000년대)가 시작될 무렵 Lower Lea Valley는 낙후되고 음울한 장소였지만, 점차 동쪽으로 계속되는 수도 런던의 성장에 힘입어,�f�012년 올림픽 공원과 런던의 새 공원이라는 유럽에서 가장 큰 재개발프로젝트 중 하나가 되는 기회를 얻게 되었다.
2012년 제30회 올림픽/장애인 올림픽 대회를 위한 모범적인 환경을 만들어내는 것은, 런던 동부의 거대한 띠 형태의 낙후 지역을 탈바꿈하는 과정의 한 단계이기도 했다.
고품격의 공공 공간 조성을 통해 이것이 도시재생의 기폭제가 되도록 하는 것이 비전이었다. 녹지 공간을 기반으로 해 온 런던 개발의 전통을 따라 새 공원과 부지를 조성하여 그 주변부가 투자와 개발이 촉진되도록 하는 것이 이 프로젝트의 컨셉이다. 이 재생 계획은 손상된 도시 조직을 수선하는 것과 더불어 새로운 커뮤니티, 기존의 커뮤니티에게는 보다 개선된 삶의 질, 그리고 세계적인 수준의 스포츠 시설이 있는 새로운 도시 지구라는 영속적인 유산을 남기고자 하는 장기적인 비전을 포함하고 있다. 올림픽 대회는 지난 세기 이후 유럽 최대의 공원이 될 새 공원을 조성하는데 있어서 기념비적인 이벤트가 될 것으로 보인다. Stratford에 근접한 새로운 공원은 Lea강의 남단에 있는 부지에 자리 잡고 있는데, Lea강은 Herfordshire 전원 지대에서부터 남쪽으로 런던을 통과해서 조수가 드나드는 템스강 하구로 합류하는 물줄기이다. 강의 북쪽 부분은 Lea Valley 지역 공원을 통과해 흐르는데, 프로젝트 비전 중 하나는 남쪽의 낮은 가치의 땅을 템스강과 런던 중심부 및 그 주변부에 있는 전원 지대를 서로 연결하여 녹지축(녹색 통로)으로 만드는 것이었다.

Threaded with canals, roads and rail lines, water pipes, sewers and electricity pylons, the Lower Lea Valley has long been the service entrance for London. At the start of the new century it was a rundown and melancholic place, but with the growth of the capital shifting eastwards it provided the opportunity for one of Europe’s largest regeneration projects, a home for the 2012 Olympic Park and a new park for London.
Creating an exemplary setting for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the 30th Olympiad, has been just one step on route to the transformation of a large swathe of run-down land in East London. The vision was to create a high-quality public space to act as the catalyst for regeneration. Following the tradition of London developments based around green spaces, the concept was to create a new park with the land at its periphery being a magnet for investment and development. Along with repairing the damaged urban fabric, the regeneration scheme included the long-term vision of leaving a lasting legacy of new communities, an improved quality of life for existing ones and a new well-served urban district with world-class sports facilities. The staging of the Games was seen as a landmark event taking place during the making of the new park; one of the largest European parks in more than a century. Close to Stratford, the new park occupies a site at the southern end of the River Lea which flows from the Hertfordshire countryside southwards through London and into the River Thames tidal estuary. The northern part of the river flows through the Lee Valley Regional Park and part of the vision was to transform low-value land in the south to create a green corridor linking the Thames and the heart of London with the countryside at its edge.
