(International Society of City and Regional Planners)

We are coming to the end of yet another cycle! 2010 was an intense year, full of highs and lows in politics, economics and in realm of environmental issues. For me personally, the year was complete with many new experiences. It has already been more than 6 months since I assumed the role of IFLA President. This new role has made me face diverse challenges and travel a great deal. IFLA occupies the majority of my professional time and I feel truly honored to have been given the opportunity to represent our beloved profession all over the world. The most wonderful part of holding this office has been having the opportunity to form new friendships in many countries with people who share our commitment to the Landscape. There is much to be done with regards to fostering awareness of our landscape and IFLA can use all the help it can get.
IFLA´s primary objective is currently the creation of a World Landscape Convention. We are working together with the Direction for Culture from UNESCO, to achieve this goal and generate a tool with the potential to put landscape on the world agenda. The landscape is comprised of ecological, social as well as economic components. This means that, protecting, developing and stewarding the landscape is essential in order to create and adapt mitigation strategies that will combat the affects of climate change and also protect biodiversity. Additionally our profession has a potential to achieve a better quality of life for all and the duty to revaluate the economic value of polluted and deteriorated sites. At this time, we are seeking partners to help us with this endeavor. With the goal of inviting professionals from other disciplines to participate with us, we are first asking that the professional representatives with whom we have a Memorandum of Understanding, such as the International Union of Architects (UIA), the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) and others to help us by writing letters of support, addressed to the UNESCO General Director. Furthermore, we are encouraging National Associations to work on their National Landscape Charters and also invite their governments, other disciplines and the public to participate, in order to begin a “bottom up” process of awareness with respect to the landscape. The Charters have been a huge success within Latin America and we have accomplished 6 charters (Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina) within the last 6 months. We kindly invite you to participate in this crusade for our Landscape and invite other disciplines to share this important task. Additionally, I would like to remind you, that the central theme for the International Landscape Architecture Month “April 2011” is Interdisciplinary Practice. This means, all associations in the World, and by extension you as well, dear Korean friends, are invited to organize a project or event focused on this issue, which is crucial to developing integrated proposals that can face up to the challenges of our complex world. Within our Executive Committee and throughout the  IFLA organization, we are putting a special focus on communication. We just created a Communication Committee during our last World Council and we are working very hard to stay in touch with all our members world-wide, while also creating links with other disciplines, first with our partner associations but in the future, with others not yet associated with IFLA .
I would like to cordially ask that you stay in touch, through your delegates, through our webpage and the Newsletter (IFLA-News). I hope the New Year brings you all health, happiness, interesting and interdisciplinary work, wonderful moments together with the people you love, luck and many blessings.
