Q. 당신이 작업할 때 가장 중요시하는 것은 무엇인가? 그리고 그것을 얻기 위해 어떤 노력을 하는가?

A. 나는 거대한 컨셉과 아이디어들만 있고 세부적인 디테일이 뒷받침 되지 않는 작업을 좋아하지 않는다. 지금 우리 주변에 멋진 아이디어는 있되, 설계프로세스가 모호한 작품들이 얼마나 많은가? 나에게 디테일은 컨셉과 동등한 것이다. 그래서 나는 항상 디테일을 컨셉화 할 수 있는 프로젝트를 하고자 한다. 이번 용산공원 프로젝트에서도 역시 신화컨설팅 팀과 함께 특정하고 세밀한 것에 관심을 가졌고, 그것에 의미를 부여하고자 하였으며, 그것을 전체 개념과 연결하려고 노력하였다. 나의 중요한 전략 중의 하나는 바로 이 연결점을 프로젝트 전면에 가져오는 것이다. 하지만 많은 사람들은 큰 프로젝트에서 이러한 디테일이 별로 중요하지 않다고 생각한다. 

이번 용산 안에서 제시했던 ‘사회적 영역(Social Network)'이 방금 말한 디테일과 컨셉의 연결점의 예가 될 것이다. 비록 이용자의 동선은 조금 복잡해지더라도, 기존의 보도와 차도를 그대로 활용하여 용산의 과거와 미래를 이어간다는 개념은 각 건물과 시설에 대한 디테일한 이해 없이는 불가능한 것이다.  

Q. What is the most important objective in a design project? In order to achieve it, what kinds of activities should one focus on? Is there any price
you have to pay to achieve it?

A. I will talk in backwards. The thing that I don’t like being involved is something that bringing up the concept but not having followed trough to the
details. To me, the details are very related to the concepts. So, I always look for the project where I can be involved all the way from the concept down to
some of the critical detailing, because one understands the project in the details. There are many good ideas but then become something else, a kind
of wayward design process.
I think one of the things I do in a project is to think about specics of it as well as articulate those specifics, and trying to link the specifics to the
general. One of the strategies of my design is to carry that connection through the project. A lot of people don’t think that’s important, even in a
large project I always ght to be involved in details.

In Yongsan project, the ‘social network’ was a good detail that is xated on the idea of repurposing the existing infrastructures as much as possible.
Using existing pathways and vehicular roads was really important, even though they made a difficult circulation system, they were the critical detailing of the design. For me, that kind of detailing was important to have
the concept work properly.
