at SWA(Los Angeles) / I.R.I.S.
SWA 로스앤젤레스 오피스는 프로젝트 개발, 출판 및 학계 활동을 통한 연구 논의에 힘 쏟고 있다. SWA 내에서 사업으로서 인정받은 이 연구 조사는 우리의 도시와 조경의 미래 성장이라는 맥락에서 공공 기반 시설을 이용하고 재정의하는 것을 시험해 보는 것으로 인식 되고 있다. 연구의 초점은 설계된 경관이 가진 한계를 다기능적이고 고성능적인 체계로 확장시킬 수 있는 방법으로서의 조경적 기반이라는 주제에 맞춰져 있다.
이런 아이디어는 사회 기반에 대한 이해의 범위 내에 있는 인식 체계의 대전환이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 복합적인 이용 프로그램에 대한 개념과 잠재적인 생태학에 대한 통합이 주된 고려 사항이다.
로스앤젤레스의 사회 기반 시설은 쇠퇴 또는 실패의 모델로서 예가 되기도 하지만 다른 어떤 도시 보다도 충분한 기반 시설을 가진다. 그리고 도시를 재고하기 위한 적절한 기회는 설계사무소들이 접근하는 전반적인 설계 작업을 초월한다면 가능해진다. 개념적인 프로젝트는 체계적인 관점을 바탕으로 수행된다. 이것은 조경이 어떻게 작용하고 부지가 가진 구조 안에 생태적, 문화적, 구조적, 사회적으로 끼워 맞춰진 다기능 네트워크로서의 역할을 하는지를 시험하는 것을 의미한다. 종종 도시 기반 시설과 연관된 프로젝트를 수행하기도 하는데, �:설계 과정의 일부로서 이런 요소들을 재고하거나 다른 목적에 맞게 고치기 위해 시도하고 있다. 이러한 접근은 동시대의 사회 기반 시설을 설계하고 실현하기 위한 협력 작업이므로 여러 분야에 걸친 팀 작업에 적합하다.
The Los Angeles based office of SWA is engaged in an ongoing dialogue of exploratory research manifested through project development, publications and academia. Established as an initiative within the office, research is seen as a testing ground for engaging and redefining infrastructure in context with the future growth of our cities and landscapes.
Focus is on the topic of landscape infrastructure as a methodology which expands the parameters of a designed landscape to a multi-functional, high performance system, including those systems originally ascribed to traditional infrastructure. This idea is part of a paradigm shift in the understanding of infrastructure, such that concepts of multiple-use programming and the integration of latent ecologies are now of primary consideration.
Infrastructure (perhaps more so than in any other city) is ever present in Los Angeles. Often in a state of decay, failure or outmoded use, Los Angeles’¯ infrastructural systems allows I.R.I.S. a framework in which to craft a unique approach to urban design and landscape architecture. A systemic view is taken towards conceptual project development; examining how the landscape operates and performs as a multi-functional network, embedded ecologically, culturally, structurally, and socially into the fabric of the site.
Often the projects within the office are engaged with urban infrastructure, presenting the challenge to rethink or repurpose this element as part of the design. This approach lends itself to collaboration and often a multidisciplinary team to both design and realize contemporary infrastructure.
