구베이 보행자 전용 도로는 도심지의 차량 전용 도로를 700미터에 이르는 안전 지대인 보행자 전용 도로로 탈바꿈시킨 귀중한 사례이다. 이 프로젝트는 대규모 개발 압력속에서 공공을 위한 오픈 스페이스 간의 균형은 불가능하다고 생각하는 사람들에게 좋은 영감을 불어넣어 주고 있다. 급속한 개발로 인해 지속가능한 도시 구조가 공공연하게 묵과되는 것이 습관이 되어가고는 있지만, 공공 오픈스페이는 도시 열섬 효과를 저감하고, 24시간 내내 벌어질 수 있는 행태들에 대해 유연하게 대처하며, 외부 활동과 스트레스를 풀어 주는 활동 및 사회적 교류를 통해 건강한 삶을 고취시키는 기능을 하고 있기 때문이다.

The Gubei Pedestrian Promenade is a rare example in which a city decided to rezone a vehicular road into a 700-meter long pedestrian-only sanctuary.
The sheer scale of the project serves as an inspiration for those who believe in the impossible—a balance of the “development frenzy” (characterized by rampant disregard for a sustainable urban fabric) with public open spaces that reduce the urban heat-island effect, allow for flexible around the clock activities, and promote healthy living through outdoor exercise, stress relieving activities and social interaction.
