Q1 _ EDSA was founded in 1960 and well known hospitality planning and design internationally, conducting projects over 90 countries and is one of the largest landscape architectural design firm in the nation. Could you introduce your firm, EDSA to Korean landscape architects and interdisciplinary professionals?
A1 _ EDSA is a diverse practice, not only in geographic areas, but also in project types and it's people, the staff at EDSA comes from over 25 different countries. We feel this diversity not only adds richness to our work environment but also to the work we produce. In terms of size, we had no real goal about how large we would be, our real goal was to help create opportunities for the younger staff, this helped us retain some of the best talent and led to much of our internal growth, slow but steady.
EDSA is an internationally-renowned, full-service planning, landscape architecture, and urban design firm with over 250 employees. Established in 1960, the Firm has extensive experience in attractions and entertainment, campus and cultural, communities and new towns, ecotourism and environmental planning, hotels and resorts, as well as urban design. EDSA is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has offices in Orlando, Florida; Beijing, China, and Baltimore, Maryland.

Q2 _ Could you introduce the milestone projects designed by EDSA and explain feature characteristic or main philosophy in those projects?
A2 _ Along the way, there have been certain key projects that have led us to newer, bigger and some crucial opportunities; there have been many milestones along the way. A common thread was the simplicity and the huge impact they have had and continue having not only on our body of work, but equally important on our clients and the people who used them. 70’ PepsiCo, Purchase, New York, USA: created a park like setting for a major corporation that was the beginning of a trend to improve work environments. It was soon realized that these types of spaces led to less turnovers, decrease in absences by illness and an overall efficiency that did not exist in the previous facility.
80’ Grand Cypress, Orlando, Florida, USA: a major impact on the hospitality industry in Orlando, it raised the bar to new levels. Also, during this period there was the El San Juan Hotel and Casino (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Treyburn(Durham, North Carolina, USA), Haig Point (Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, USA), Orlando International Airport (Orlando, Florida, USA) and Pont Royal (Aixen Provence, France).
90’ The Fort Lauderdale Beach Front and Riverwalk, Florida, USA, these two projects had a major impact on the image of Fort Lauderdale and the economic development for the city. The Museum of Anthropology in Xalapa, Mexico was one of a kind and an important tourist destination. This decade was also the beginning of Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas, which led theme tourism into the next millennium.
2000’ Many more incredible projects opened up in the Middle East such as Royal Mirage and Madinat Jumeirah. The beginning of the 2000’ has been fantastic with many excellent projects opening all over; it was also the start of our China operations which has led us to many incredible opportunities. Currently, we are finishing Design Development Drawings for an incredible project in Al Ain, UAE; The Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort, it is part of Abu Dhabi. It is a Wildlife Park and Resort; the main components are the Zheik Zayed Learning Center which is the jewel of the project, a world desert zoo, 4 safari treks and a research and conservation area, and others. Along with these elements, is a resort hotel, shopping and entertainment and a residential component. The project is currently under construction and scheduled to open in November 2011.

Q2 _ 그동안 EDSA가 수행한 프로젝트 가운데 대표작품에 대해서 소개를 부탁드립니다. 아울러 그 작품들의 특징과 거기에 담겨있는 EDSA의 설계철학에 대해서도 말씀해 주시면 좋겠습니다.
A2 _ 과거의 일부 프로젝트들은 우리를 새롭고 크고 또한 더 중요한 기회로 이끌어 왔습니다. 이들 프로젝트의 공통된 맥락은 설계의 직관적 명료함에 있다고 하겠습니다. EDSA 프로젝트에 내재되어 있는 이러한 설계철학은 저희 클라이언트 뿐만 아니라 이용자들에게 중요한 문제이기도 합니다. 연대별로 주요 프로젝트를 소개하겠습니다.
1970년대 펩시코 본사(미국 뉴욕주 퍼체이스 소재)는 공원과 같은 자연환경 속에 대기업을 입지시켜서 근무환경을 개선하는 작업으로서 새로운 트랜드의 시발점이 된 프로젝트입니다. 이 프로젝트 이후, 펩시코 본사의 이직율과 병가가 줄었고 전반적인 업무 향상을 가져왔는데, 당시 유사한 다른 프로젝트에서는 찾아보기 힘든 사례입니다.
1980년대 그랜드 사이프레스(플로리다주 올랜도 소재)는 올랜도 지역의 호스피탈리티 산업에 중요한 영향을 미쳤으며, 리조트의 수준을 한단계 상승시킨 작품입니다.
그 외 주요 작품으로는 엘 산 후안 호텔 리조트(푸에르토리코, 산 후안 소재), 트레이번(노스 캐롤라이나, 덜햄소재), 헤이그 포인트(사우스 캐롤라이나 다우푸스키 소재), 올랜도 국제공항(플로리다주 올랜도 소재), 그리고 폰트 로얄(프랑스, 엑스 프로빈스 소재)이 있습니다.
1990년대 포트 로더데일 비치 프론트와 리버워크(플로리다 포트 로더데일 소재), 이 두 프로젝트는 포트 로더데일의 도시 이미지 및 경제적 효과에 큰 영향을 미친 프로젝트입니다. 잘라파 인류학 박물관(멕시코, 잘라파 소재)은 멕시코의 주요한 관광명소이며, 이 시기는 새로운 밀레니엄 시대의 테마관광 분야에서 중요한 프로젝트인 아틀란티스(바하마 파라다이스 아일랜드 소재) 프로젝트가 시작된 시기이기도 합니다.
2000년대 중동지역의 로얄 미라지와 마디낫 주메이라 리조트 같은 대규모의 아주 멋진 프로젝트들로 시작하였습니다. 또한 이 시기에는 중국에 진출하여 실질적인 사무실 운영을 시작하기도 했습니다. 현재는 아랍에미레이트 아부다비의 알 아인 와일드라이프 파크 리조트의 기본설계 작업을 마무리하고 있는데, 이 작품의 주요시설로는 부지의 핵심이 되는 셰익자이에드 학습 센터, 월드 데저트 동물원, 4개의 사파리 지역, 연구 및 보전 센터 등이 있으며, 그 밖에 리조트 호텔, 쇼핑 및 엔터테인먼트, 그리고 주거지역이 있습니다. 2011년 11월 완공을 목표로 현재 공사중에 있습니다.
