Blackpool Promenade and Coastal Protection
19세기 호황 시절에 노동계급의 휴식 공간이었던 Blackpool 해변의 철도는 수천 명의 관광객들을 실어 나르는 역할을 하였다. 당시 Blackpool은 가장 크고 화려한 연회장으로서 Pleasure Beach 놀이 공원의 중심이자 항구, 극장, 그리고 야간 조명으로 유명한 곳이었다. 전후에 경쟁이나 하듯 값싸진 해외여행 상품들로 모여드는 인구 밀도와 점진적으로 높아지는 해수면으로부터 도시를 보호하기 위해 해변의 개방을 제한했던 이곳의 시대에 뒤떨어진 정책들이 오히려 Blackpool의 경제적 활기를 저해시키고 물리적 형태를 더욱 악화시켰다. 이러한 불행을 만회하기 위해 도시는 재활/재생 프로그램을 시작하였고, 라스베이거스가 했던 것처럼 Blackpool은 한때의 화려한 일탈을 약속했고, 이곳의 특별함은 다음 세대를 위한 영감이 되어 주었다.
With millions of visitors annually, Blackpool enjoyed over a century as Britain’ premier seaside resort before suffering from physical and economic decline. Thanks to a boom in discount vacations abroad and the increasing threat of extreme weather and rising seas due to climate change, Blackpool grew estranged from its most valuable asset: the beachfront.
This project answers the question: Is it possible to reconcile the conflict between rising sea levels and increased storminess with access to waterfront recreation?
