서양 사가들은 지금도 잊지 못한다. 쭉 찢어진 눈과 노란 피부의 악귀들을. 그들은 13세기 때 난데없이 유럽의 관문인 동유럽에 들이닥쳤다. 참혹하기 그지없었다. 그들이 지나간 도시는 시체와 잿더미뿐이었으니. 물론 용맹한 기사들로 구성된 유럽연합군이 맞섰다. 그러나 기사단은 허울만 좋았지 날쌘 악귀들의 제물에 불과했다. 워낙 압도적인 존재였기에 이제 대적은 불가능해 보였다. 전 유럽이 공포로 얼어붙었다. 얼마나 겁에 질렸으면 스스로의 도덕적 타락에 대한 신의 형벌로 보기까지 했을까? 잘 알다시피 그 악귀는 몽고 기마병이다. 그로부터 약 800년 뒤인 2012년. 그 때와 똑같이 말을 타고 싸이가 달려갔다. 천리마보다 빠른 투명마였다. 유튜브를 이용해 빛의 속도로 움직였다. 찢어진 눈과 짧은 다리, 영락없는 몽고 기마병이다. 다만 이번에는 공포가 아닌 ‘흥겨움’으로 무장했고, 쳐들어간 게 아니라 환대를 받았다. 곧 유럽과 아메리카 대륙 곳곳에서 그의 말발굽 소리가 들렸다. 그동안 소위 식스팩과 꽃미남의 자칭 월드스타도 실패했다. 동남아를 휘젓던 화려한 군무도 잘 먹히지 않았다. 그러던 서구의 벽을, 싸이는 단숨에 뚫었다. 그들은 대체 싸이에게서 무엇을 본 것일까? 월드스타가 뽐내던 근육질 몸도, 조막만한 얼굴도 아니었다. 그러나 가만 생각해보자. 이미 내가 가진 것은 남이 가지고 있어도 흥미가 없지 않는가? 더구나 내가 오리지널을 가졌는데 짝퉁에 무슨 관심이 있을까? 기껏해야 “그것 참, 흉내도 잘 내는구나!”가 고작일 것이다. 싸이는 이미 예전에 “가장 한국적인 정서가 가장 세계적인 것이므로, 극단의 토속적인 외모로 한국을 알릴 수 있다.”고 했다. 이 말은 오래전부터 건축이, 그리고 상당기간 조경이 고민해 온 ‘한국성’을 다시 생각하게 해준다. 재작년과 작년의 두 해에 걸쳐 첼시 플라워쇼에서 수상한 황지해 작가의 정원도 마찬가지다. 더 타임스가 ‘가장 독창적인 정원’이라 평했으니 황지해도 애초에 짝퉁이 될 생각은 없었나 보다. 그의 정원은 재작년엔 해우소, 작년엔 DMZ가 모티브였다. 남에게 드러내기 싫은 공간이자 아픈 우리 역사의 한 지점이다. 그것이 독창적인 곳으로 변했고, 심금을 울리는 장소로 거듭났다. DMZ 정원에 “명품 나무와 꽃 대신 들풀, 야생화를 심었다.”는 그의 설명에서는 싸이의 음악을 B급 정서로 소개하는 뉴스가 조용히 중첩된다. A급을 기준으로 했을 때 B급일 뿐이지 사실 저잣거리 정서이자 대중정서로 봐야 한다. 한국성의 가치는 당연히 소수 1%의 것보다 99%의 것이 더 크다. 비싸고 희귀한 식물보다 우리 주변에서 어릴 때부터 흔히 봐 왔던 식물들을 심은 DMZ 정원의 가치가 만만찮은 이유이다. DMZ 정원에는 군인들이 지혈할 때 쓰던 쑥, 배 아플 때 짜서 마신 질경이, 대체식량이 되어준 머루와 다래, 냉이, 민들레가 심어졌다. 굳이 스토리텔링을 말하지 않아도 자연스럽게 머릿속에서 연상 작용이 활발해지고 이야기가 연결된다. 고관대작 양반집 이야기가 아니라 우리 주변의 생활사였기 때문이리라. 실재하는 삶이야말로 항상 최고의 감동을 줄 수 있음을 다시 한 번 느낀다. 정원 역사가 긴 유럽에서 어설프게 그들을 흉내 내지 않았다. 그렇다고 해서 방형과 원형의 평면기하학과 몇 가지 박제된 구조물로 틀에 박힌 문화적 상징을 만들지도 않았다. 이러한 점에서 그의 정원은 남다르다. 종내 한국적 공간에 이르지 못하는, 한국적 조경설계만을 무한 재생산하는 현실을 되돌아보게 한다. 흔히 볼 수 있다. 설계의도를 현란한 수사로 포장한 작품들을. 그러나 언어적인 수사학이 공간의 한국성을 보장하지도 않을 뿐만 아니라 별다른 인과관계도 없다. 그들이 즐겨 차용하는 언어학에서 랑그langue와 파롤parole의 차이만큼이나 그 간극은 오히려 크다. 황지해의 정원은 유럽 현지인들에게 이질적 정서를 충분히 느끼게 해 주었다. 거울속의 나를 보는듯한 동질성보다 타자적인 충격은 항상 잊었던 것들의 가치를 다시 생각하게 해 준다. 형태적인 이질성 속에서 그 의미를 생각하게 되고, 하나씩 그 맥락이 이해될 때 조용히 머리가 끄덕여졌을 것이다. 감동이 오기 위해서는 이렇게 공감이란 중간 과정이 필요하다. 공감은 소통이 원활할 때 오는데, 공통된 경험만큼이나 원활한 소통을 돕는 것은 없다. 영국이 한국전 참전국이라는 것은 DMZ 정원의 성공을 위한 마지막 장치였다. 그리고 이것을 미리 읽어낸 것은 온전히 작가의 덕이다. WTO에 이은 FTA 체제화는 이미 조경시장의 국내외 혈전이 시작되었음을 알린다. 외국에 나가 저들과 경쟁해야 하고, 우리 시장을 넘보는 저들과 맞서야 한다. 그러나 설계시장을 보면 외국 진출은 미미한 상태에서 오히려 외국 업체의 국내 진출만 잦아지고 있다. 작년에 큰 관심사였던 용산공원 현상설계는 결국 외국 업체의 안이 뽑혔다. 이런저런 말이 많았다. 그러나 역사적 맥락과 장소성이 중시된 대상지였음에도 불구하고 제대로 외국 업체를 압도하지 못했음은 부인할 수 없다. 흔히 실무에서는 서구의 현상설계 당선작과 여러 사례들을 보며 그 기법을 익히는데 온통 몰입하는 경우가 적지 않다. 해외 설계경향과 기법을 익히는 데만 온통 신경을 집중하는 경우가 적지 않다. 물론 베스트셀러는 항상 좋은 공부가 된다. 그러나 그것만 보아서는 시대적 추세와 경향을 바지런히 쫓아다닐 뿐이다. 그러다 보면 자신의 독자적인 영역구축은 점차 요원해지고, 결국 패스트 팔로어fast follower로 만족하는 신세가 된다. 용산공원의 추억은 뼈아프지만 깊이 기억할 필요가 있다. 세계화시대에서 한국 조경이 산토끼는커녕 오히려 집토끼도 놓칠 수 있음을 알려주었기 때문이다. 그리고, 싸이와 황지해는 그것을 뛰어넘는 방법의 한 자락을 슬며시 보여주었다. Historians in the Western world can never forget the demons from Asia. They, all of a sudden, attacked the eastern Europe, the gateway to other European nations. They left behind none but bodies of the deceased and ashes of the buildings burnt to the ground. A group of courageous knights tried to fight back only to fail unmatched by the seasoned monsters of battles. European people were devastated by immense fear, desperate and helpless. They were so afraid that they even thought the disaster was God’s punishment for their moral corruption. As you know, these fierce warriors were Mongolian horsemen. In 2012, after 800 years or so, pop star Psy rushed to the countries, riding his own invisible horse finer than any other horse in the world. He could be moving at the speed of light via YouTube. His appearance might have reminded his audience of Mongolian cavalry, but this time it is not panic, but excitement that this horseman’s trying to offer. He is not being feared, but welcomed. The clattering of his invisible horse’s hoofs is now being heard everywhere in the world. In fact, few of the Korean idol stars have made a splash on the global scale so far, even though they are beautiful and talented and sometimes call themselves so called world stars. On the other hand, Psy, seemingly rather easy in some aspects, has taken the world by storm. He’s not a muscular and handsome guy in the slightest. Then what do people like so much about Psy? Psy once mentioned that ‘to be Korean can be to be global, and someday he can make his native country be known in the world with his ‘folksy’ look.’ This allows us to think again about what can be considered Korean in architecture, in particular, in landscape architecture. So do the gardens of Jihae Hwang, who won medals at Chelsea Flower Show for 2 consecutive years. As The Times described her work as the most distinctive, she must have demonstrated ingenuity. The motives for the last year and this year were Hae-woo-so (Emptying One’s Mind) and De- militarized Zone respectively. The toilet of a temple, which is believed to be where you can empty your mind, is never a place you’d like to share with others, and the still inhabited area between two hostile military forces makes us remember such a tragic moment in our history. She transformed them into unique spaces touching people’s hearts. Hwang said she had planted wild herbs and flowers instead of luxurious trees and plants. This kind attitude is also to be observed in Psy’s music, which has often been described as some sort of B-list culture. However, this is not merely a B-class approach in comparison with A-class standard, but represents, at the same time, the emotions of the streets, that is, the feelings of ordinary people. The core of Korean emotion is not about top 1%, but about the rest of people. The true value of DMZ Forbidden Garden is appreciated when we understand the reason that the gardener planted familiar species instead of expensive and rare ones. As the designer herself states ‘the barbed wire fence surrounding the garden creates a feeling of mystery and unease. Carefully considered installations feature the remains of warfare, including defensive walls, trenches and charred trees. […] The watchtower reminds visitors of the surveillance of the DMZ and also provides an observation point for the garden.’ The garden inspires audience to come up with images, which, in turn, leads to storytelling. The story’s focus is not on an affluent but boring life of aristocrats, but on an everyday of common people. It is the portrait of real life that can create a great impression. Hwang’s garden is distinctive in that she does not imitate the European tradition, never creating stereotyped cultural symbols. I have witnessed many entries to various design competitions. The designers tried to explain the intention of their work, rarely to succeed. The language itself never guarantees the relevance of the work, and how much the work represents the quality of being uniquely Korean. There is no causal relationship to be found. The gardens created by Jihae Hwang must have provided Europeans with an opportunity to experience different kind of emotions. Feeling strange usually reminds us of the things that we have long forgotten. We sympathize when we think of the meaning of being different and gradually understand the context where it is created. Sympathy is essential for us to be deeply moved by something, and sympathy is created when there is an effective communication process; in other words, when people have something in common. Great Britain is one of the 16 nations that participated in the Korean conflict, and that contributed, more or less, to making Hwang’s garden a success. As the scheme of WTO, and now that of FTA rules the country, the market has become a battlefield for both international and local companies. However, there are far more foreign organizations that enter the local market than the Korean landscape architects that strive to expand their business overseas. We should ask ourselves how much effort we have made to realize what is truly Korean in the landscape architectural works. Yes, we have to keep learning from others and being sensitive to international trends, but we should also create and develop our own characters, in order not to be just fast followers. Psy and Jihae Hwang present a priceless lesson for us to overcome ourselves and find a way to a new direction.
