서울과 같은 대도시에서 공간을 지각하거나 경험할 수 없다고 말하면, 다들 어불성설이라 할 것이다. 어디를 가나 우리 몸이 이미 공간 속에 처하니, 공간을 떠나 살 방도가 아예 없다고도 말할 것이다. 그런데, 공간이라는 말을, 현대건축의 본질은 빈 공간void의 형식화에 있다고 주창한 콜린 로우의 맥락에서, 그러니까 현대건축의 관점에서 쓰기로 한다면, 그러한 명백히 우문 같아 보이는 물음에, 우답이든 현답이든, 즉답하기가 그렇게 쉽지만은 않게 될 것이다. 오늘날의 빈 공간은 모조리 파편화되어 있기 때문이다. 더군다나, 현대건축을 창조한 것은 실수라는, 그리하여 그 실수의 결과물을 정크스페이스라 칭한 렘 콜하스의 다음의 주장을 들으면, 더더욱 그렇게 될 것이다. 렘에 따르면, 우리는 목하 정크스페이스 곧 “에스컬레이터와 공기조화air-conditioning가 만나 석고판sheetrock이라는 인큐베이터에서 임신되어 나온 산물이 셋은 역사책에 빠져있다”에서 살고 있다. 본디그러니까, 적어도 건축은 어떻게 존재하는 것이 아니라 ‘어떻게 보이는지’ 곧 현상/표상에 존재한다고 주장한 비트루비우스 당대부터 이미지로 존재해온 건축은, 다국적 자본이 가상의 공간에서 빛의 속도로 이동하고, 경제력이 곧 정치력이 된 소비사회인 스펙터클과 시뮬라크르 사회에서, 무겁고물질로 출현하는 까닭에, 느리고디자인 시점과 공사완료 시점 간의 시차로 인해, 기술 의존적이고, 자본 기생적인 조건 안에서 두 종류의 밀도광각과 정보로 스펙터클의 경쟁에 참여하면서 경제와 더불어 오직 확장일로의 닦달 속에 놓여있는위계를 축적으로, 구성을 첨가로 대체하는 까닭에, 필연적으로 껍질에 의해 봉합“벽들이 소멸되고 오직 칸막이들로만 구획되는, 종종 금으로 마감된 피막으로 어른거리는, 구조가 장식 밑에서 보이지 않게 신음하거나, 더 나쁘게는 구조가 장식이” 되는 경로를 밟았고, 그리하여심지어 디테일 곧 재료들의 결합도 “호치키스와 테이프로 규정”되는 탓에, 공간 혹은 공간감을 어쩔 수 없이 박탈당할 수밖에 없었다는 이론적 성찰 앞에서는, 처음에 던진 질문의 크기가 좀 더 커졌을 것이다. 물론 기술자본주의가 생산해내는, 따라서 당연히 자본주의 이데올로기에 정렬된 정크스페이스도 빈 공간을 지녔다. 어찌 공간 없는 건축이, 그리고 도시가 존재하겠는가. 그런데 그것은 정확히 “빅 브라더의 배의 내부”로서, 우리의 감각과 감성과 욕망을 선취함으로써 내어놓은 브랜드스페이스들의 카탈로그인 까닭에, 앞서 언급한 태동기와 성기에 속한, 그러니까 20세기 초의 현대건축의 핵을 구성한, 그러한 공간이 아니고, 따라서 그러한 공간감과 동떨어져 있다. 그것은, 쾌락과 쾌적이라는 이름으로 비판능력의 뇌관을 제거시킨채 파편으로 존재하는, 그리고 그와 동시에 그 모든 파편들이 가시적인, 현기증 나는 팝옵티콘적 대중 영합주의 공간으로, 언제든 어디서든 교환가능하고 복제가능하다. 그리고 그것은, “흐리멍덩함의 퍼지fuzzy 제국”을 이루어, 혼돈으로부터 만들어내는 질서 잡힌 공간이 아니라, 동질적인 것들로써 생산되는 회화적인 공간이며, 첨가적이고 중층적이고 가벼운 공간으로서, “공적인 것과 사적인 것, 똑바른 것과 굽은 것, 포만한 자와 굶주린 자, 고급문화와 대중문화를 융합해서, 영원히 탈구된 것들을 이음매 없는 쪽매붙임으로 제공”하는, “디자인은 없고 다만 창조적인 증식”만 존재하는 공간이다. 정크스페이스가 아닌 공간 혹은 공간감, 그러니까 교환 불가능한 공간은 어디에 현존할 수 있거나 지각/경험 가능한 것인가? 돈이 운동하는 것이것이 바로 자본의 정의다은, 인간의 모든 욕구와 욕동과 충동과 욕망이, 최첨단 수리통계와 심리학에 기초한 자본주의의 꽃인 광고기술과 기법에 의해 영토화되고, 탈영토화되고, 재영토화되는 순환구조에 기입됨으로써만 가능한 탓에, 결국 돈이 정지된 곳이거나, 돈이 되지 않는 곳일 수밖에 없다. 풀과 나무, 심지어 청정한 공기마저 상품, 그것도 지구적 스케일의 긴박한 생태위기감 조성 탓에, 새롭게 떠오른 핫 아이템이 되었으니, 역설적으로, 무소부재한 상품포장들의 파편들이 우발적으로 아나모포시스anamorphosis를 그려내는 상황이거나, 그것들을 매우 정치하게 재조직해내는 거대 스케일 디자인의 미세한 창발적 작업에 기대는 것이 훨씬 더 현실가능하지 않을까? 혹은, 오늘날의 건축이 정크스페이스로 껍질존재가 되었으니, 거꾸로, 곁 혹은 딸린 존재로 머물러왔던 땅과 풀들과 나무들과 바람과 하늘에, 자본주의의 망에 이미 포획된 그것들의 껍질은 미련 없이 포기하고, 빈 공간의 부피를 만들어주는 것이 차라리 현실적이지 아닐까? 그것이 본디의 의미의 땅의 경지경, 빛의 경광경, 바람의 경풍경이지 않을까? 익숙한 상품들의 전혀 다른 범주화로, 그리고 그 껍질들로써 교환 불가능한 공간을 만들어내는 일은, 현실적으로 도무지 불가능한 일일까? If you say you can’t recognize or experience space, most people will respond that doesn’t make sense at all. They may even say that since we are already in space wherever we go, there is not a single way we can live without being in any space. As Colin Rowe points out, however, who maintained that the modern architecture is formation of void, it might be somewhat difficult to come up with the answer to this question of space if it is to be understood in the context of the contemporary architecture. It is mainly because the void of a modern society is completely fragmented. Moreover, it appears even truer when you consider the remark of Rem Koolhaas, who said that the modern architecture is created by mistakes, and the result of those mistakes can be referred to as Junkspace. According to Koolhaas, we are living in Junkspace, which is “product of the encounter between escalator and air conditioning, conceived in an incubator of sheetrock (all three missing from the history books).” As architecture, which has long been perceived as an image, now exists in a fast paced society where multinational capital is moving at the speed of light through cyberspace and a consumer society where economic power is regarded as political power, under the unavoidable pressure of its infinite expansion, confronted with the serious competition of creating spectacles, it is believed that architecture has, inevitably, been deprived of its space or its sense of space. Now we are faced with a much bigger question. Junkspace being produced by technology- oriented capitalism is sure to possess void. How could there be architecture or cities without space? However, since it is nothing but the catalog of brand spaces created with our sense, sensitivity, and desire already deprived, it can never be the same space which played an integral part of modern architecture in the early 20th century, consequently far removed from the same sense of space. It is just a sum of fragmented spaces existing solely for pleasure and comfort, and, at the same time, each fragment is visual space of popularism leading to serious vertigo. Therefore, it is exchangeable and copiable, anytime and anywhere. It is “light- weight space where the public and private, the straight and bent, the satiated and starving, and the elite and pop culture are all mixed together for seamless marquetry,” and where there is not design but some creative reproduction.” Where do we possibly recognize and experience unexchangeable space different from Junkspace? As the core of capitalism is the method and technology of advertisement, which manipulates human lust, desire, and impulse exploiting the most advanced statistics and psychology, and this is where money flows in, we can experience true space or sense of space only at a place where money stops moving or it’s impossible to many money. We are living in an era where even the ecological catastrophe on a global scale is made to contribute to selling plants, trees, and fresh air as products, or hot items in some cases. Now that modern architecture has become Junkspace, an abstract surfacel without its content, it might be a more realistic approach to create volume of void with earth, plants, wind, and the sky, abandoning what has been already captivated by the power of capitalism and never looking back. Is it really impossible to compose unexchangeable space by differently categorizing some familiar items?
